Ruth Roman was born on June 22, 1939 in Lynn Massachusetts. The actress is the eldest child of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold & Abraham Roman. When she was young the father was a carnival barker, leaving Ruth's mother no option but to be a cleaning girl and waitress to support her family. Ruth was born in a poor neighborhood of Boston Massachusetts in which she went to the school. But she quit school only after two years to explore a career in acting. There were many hurdles to overcome on her path to success. When she was in New York she was hired to take photos for a magazine about crime, but no theatrical opportunities were offered. Following a short stint as a club hat girl and a club hat girl, she made the decision to go to her home in Massachusetts and leave her position. She made the ends meet by working as an usherette in the morning, while working at night with the New England Repertory Company, her first regular acting gig. She was a drama student in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
